A rent receipt your employer will actually accept

Rent receipts are usually produced in a hurry in January, backdated for a year, and rejected by the employer. The usual causes are small: the landlord's PAN is missing, the period does not line up with the payments, or the same signature appears in twelve identical positions.

Issuing a receipt every month takes seconds and avoids the scramble. Where rent is paid quarterly, one receipt per quarter works. Keep a copy either way.

If you claim house rent allowance, the employer will usually also want the rent agreement. Above a limit set by the income tax rules, the landlord's PAN is needed too. Confirm the current limit with a tax professional or your employer's finance team rather than relying on last year's figure.

My Property Pages offers a free rent receipt format to download, print or fill in by hand, with 6 sections.
